Boatshed Plymouth is pleased to announce the expansion of one of our neighbours; local company Slik Cut, who are absolute wizards when it comes to making anything out of canvas, are expanding. Although yacht brokerage is generally thought to be about buying and selling boats here at Boatshed Plymouth we always try to offer a little bit more and pointing people in the direction of good local reliable marine services is one way we can help.

Many of you will know Phil Byatt and Peter Hamlyn who have been running Slik Cut from the Eastern Hangar at Mount Batten for years; well we are happy to report that they have been joined by Richard and Amanda Shelmerdine who live at Noss Mayo on the banks of the beautiful River Yealm.

Richard has worked within the marine industry for several years, most recently as a local depot manager for Aquafax and Amanda was an Estate Agent in the Plymouth area before the couple decided to take on the challenge of expanding Slik Cut. Richard will now be responsible for the operations side of the business but is also learning the more hands on side of the business from Phil so he can help out now things are getting so much busier. Amanda will be running the office and taking care of marketing for the company though she also has another job and will be working for a new local radio station which is going live this spring.

Slik Cut can make any of the canvas work normally found on boats, spray hoods, fly bridge covers, dodgers, biminis, winch covers, table and console covers to name a few things! They make a great range of kit bags and my favourite the really cute bug bags but can also make canvas awnings, shades and covers for garden furniture.

They can also make up webbing items such as jack stays or battery straps.

Then there’s the repair side of the business. They do repairs to canvas work and sails but they’ll have a go at fixing all sorts of things, they’d undertaken to repair someone’s foul weather jacket zip yesterday.

Slik cut can do sail repairs and modifications such as adding reefing points, replacing or adding a UV strip adding sail numbers and tell tales. They can also offer a checking, cleaning and storage service for sails.

Canvas items can also be valeted and it makes such a difference to a boats appearance if the covers, dodgers and sprayhood are clean. All valeting is sent to Hancock Marine Services weekly, collection and delivery being on Wednesdays.

Slik Cut covers the general Plymouth and South Hams area including East Cornwall. They are regularly in and out of the Mayflower, Queen Annes Battery (QAB), Sutton Harbour and Millbay marinas and are situated adjacent to Plymouth Yacht Haven. Boats on the river Yealm can easily be accommodated now Richard and Amanda are involved but the team regularly travel to Dartmouth, Salcombe and Saltash to measure up for canvas work and collect or return sails.

Amanda has introduced a few changes to the accounting and invoicing system including the ability to take payment by card which most people prefer these days and the workshop has been modified a little to create space for people to come in and discuss their ideas and plans to ensure every one gets exactly what they want. Other than that its business as usual with Phil and Pete producing the same great quality bespoke products. They are helped by part time machinist Sarah and could be looking for another part time machinist later this spring as the orders mount up.
