Confused about electronics? One Jester Sailors answers.

Tuesday, 16 February 2010

The array of electronic goodies and gadgets available for boats is mind blowing and the advertising for them seems to insist you’d be foolish to venture out without all of them so Boatshed Plymouth called by “Just Right” one of this year’s Jester Challenge entrants to see what electronics Gus Davidson will be using to get him and his 20’ Golant Gaffer safely across the pond. Gus has a keen eye on the budget as he’s raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support so he weighs the cost of each piece of equipment carefully to ensure as much money as possible goes to the charity.

As yacht brokers we do try to help out wherever we can but occasionally you get asked a question about boats which you’ve never come across before so when one of our customers recently asked us about repairing some damage to interior woodwork on a boat we needed to ask a few questions to find out who could do this locally in Plymouth.

Boatshed Plymouth is pleased to announce the expansion of one of our neighbours; local company Slik Cut, who are absolute wizards when it comes to making anything out of canvas, are expanding. Although yacht brokerage is generally thought to be about buying and selling boats here at Boatshed Plymouth we always try to offer a little bit more and pointing people in the direction of good local reliable marine services is one way we can help.

FIVE BOY RACERS AND A FAT BLOKE GET SOAKED

They have always been there, somewhere, lurking not so much in my mind as so many things seem to lurk, but more generally in the bottom of a cockpit locker. The white plastic canister, the yellow or orange industrial carrier bag, doesn’t recycle it just yet. Yes, it’s the life raft. When skippers of old used to give me briefings before setting off for parts foreign they were generally covered with the cursory wave of a knarled weather worn hand, having first exposed the package from beneath a couple of old warps, buckets, oars, fenders, you know the sort of thing. Or, in the case of the more fastidious of owners, neatly wrapped in heavy duty polyethylene and bound in gaffa tape, followed by a sage “You need to look after these things my boy, they cost a fortune”.

The Jester Challenge has its supporters and critics, but whatever you think about it it’s certainly becoming a firm fixture on the sailing calendar. The 2010 event which leaves from off Plymouth Breakwater at 13:00 BST on 23rd May already has 93 entries. Boats are less than 30 feet but the current list is an incredibly fascinating and varied mix of boats and people. One such sailor is Gus Davidson who are taking part in the challenge in his boat Just Right in order to raise money and awareness for Macmillan Cancer support. Raising money is their main aim although there will undoubtedly be some adventure along the way .

We all want our boats to look like new, luckily as a Yacht Broker I get to see some very tasty well kept boats like the 3 year old Jeanneau 35 Sun Odyssey Legende which I have just listed, but I also see very many used boats which although perfectly serviceable and sea worthy are no longer as pristine as they used to be, my own boat is still in reasonable condition but she is almost 30 now and did have a fairly hard racing career in her day so there are a few knocks and dings which in the ideal world I’d like to fix but don’t have the skills to do well.

Boatshed Yacht brokers investigate life raft servicing

Boatshed Yacht brokers investigate life raft servicing

Tuesday, 08 December 2009

Tony and Amina Cleal of Boatshed Plymouth took a couple of hours off from their busy Plymouth brokerage to find out what happens when a life raft is serviced. Out of date safety equipment is one of those things which regularly crops up on used boat surveys so when the couple realised their Seago 4 man valise liferaft which has thankfully been sitting unused aboard their Sigma 33 for the past 3 years needed servicing they headed off to CE Banyard Ltd in Lostwithiel Cornwall to find out what really is inside a liferaft.

As yacht brokers we often get asked about gas systems on boats, it’s one of those things that often comes up when a used boat is surveyed. We all know just how dangerous and fatal gas explosions can be so Amina Cleal from Boatshed Plymouth took the opportunity to find out a bit more about this potentially lethal subject from South West marine gas engineer Tim Beck.

Boatshed Plymouth winter news for the South-west

Tuesday, 01 December 2009

The team at Boatshed Plymouth hope that you and your boat, if you have one, are fairing OK with this very wet and windy weather we’ve been having. Now is the time of year when most of the boats in Plymouth take a break. Some are left in readiness for the odd nice winter’s day but the majority are either lifted out and safely tucked up in a yard or snugged down in the water with lines doubled up and stores removed.
