Now that the kids are home for the school summer holidays are you wondering how to keep them entertained without spending a fortune? These low-cost ideas will make an unusual family day out and keep the grown-ups happy too – that is if you’re canal-loving parents!

1) Towpath Walks Society

On 2nd August there is a walk on the Regent's Canal in London from Mile End to Limehouse , and on 16th August The Olympics walk from Three Mills and Bow Back Rivers to Bromley-by-Bow. The start time for both walks is 2.30pm and the charge is £10. No booking is necessary; just call Roger Wilkinson for more information. 020 3612 9624.

2) Taster fishing session at Startops Reservoir

On the 1st August from 11am until 4pm everyone is welcome to come along and try fishing near Marsworth, Tring. A taster session is a good way to learn all you need to know to get you started. So if you've never tried it just head to Startops Reservoir near locks 39-40.

3) Blisworth Canal Festival 2015

Last year more than 25 thousand people came to the Blisworth Canal Festival. This year’s event is on 8th and 9th August from 11am until 5pm. There will be boat trips, trade boats and workboats plus a children’s fairground, pony rides, a dog show and much more. 4) Londoners invited to create giant clay sculpture

On 15th and 16th August from 12pm until 4pm Londoners are invited to create a giant clay sculpture as a tribute to the unacknowledged builders of the city. Arts organisation Clayground Collective will be in Granary Square, King’s Cross with five tons of clay! People of all ages and abilities are encouraged to come along, and there will be pottery demonstrations and live music: Definitely an unusual day out and it's free.

5) Discovering the Regent's Canal

The Canal and River Trust are offering a guided walk exploring the history of the Regent's Canal between Islington and Camden on Sunday 23rd August 10:00 am - 12:30 pm. (Meet at 10am at Angel Station.) This event is also free of charge, but donations to the Canal and River Trust are welcome. The walk will finish at Camden Market. 6) Open day at Tringford Pumping Station

On 29th August from 10am until 4pm this is an opportunity for your family to learn about the history of the pumping station take a tour. There will be a regular shuttle bus going from Startops car park in Marsworth, over to the pumping station.

7) Fun and games at Limehouse Basin

Also on 29th August visitors can discover the Floating Cinema, Bite Market and live music, screenings, walks, talks and workshops. The Museum of Docklands offers interactive games for young children and their families that explore local heritage through objects and play. www.limehousebasin.london
